How much does a website cost? Pricing logic instead of a price list
A fixed website price is reliable only once the scope has been defined. Here is the calculation: four cost drivers, potential extras and a checklist for a comparable proposal.

Introduction
The cost of a website depends substantially on its scope, content, technology and subsequent maintenance. A fixed price is reliable only when these points and the handling of changes are defined.
My background is in financial control. It teaches you not to judge proposals by the final total, but to ask: what exactly is included, and what is missing?
This article gives you precisely that perspective. There is no price list because every honest figure depends on your project. Instead, you get the complete calculation for examining any proposal, including ours.
Chapter 01
Why a fixed price needs a defined scope
A website is not an off-the-shelf product. A brochure website with five subpages and an online shop with inventory management share a name but have about as much in common as a cargo bicycle and an articulated lorry.
A single figure without a service description explains neither the work included nor later additional costs. Low and high fixed prices should therefore not be judged on the final amount alone.
Compare the cost drivers, assumptions and exclusions instead. This lets you read a proposal as a calculation rather than merely a final total.
Chapter 02
The four cost drivers
These four factors are a useful starting point. For every proposal, ask how they have been calculated and which further costs may be added:
- Scope: How many pages and how many templates? Ten subpages based on three reusable templates cost significantly less than ten individually designed pages. The number of templates, not pages, is decisive.
- Content: Copy, photos and videos. Clarify who creates, checks and approves them, and which usage rights are included.
- Technology: Website builder, WordPress, shop system or bespoke development. Booking systems, integrations and multilingual functionality can each change the workload.
- Maintenance: Updates, security, hosting and changes after launch. Ask about ongoing costs, responsibilities, response times and exclusions.
Chapter 03
The hidden items proposals often omit
If two proposals differ substantially despite describing similar services, first examine their scope, assumptions and exclusions rather than assuming they cover the same work.
Points often requiring clarification include copy, photo and image rights, search engine fundamentals, content migration, revision rounds and changes after launch. Each may be included or charged as an extra.
A relaunch also requires URL mapping and redirects. Inadequate planning can affect crawling, indexing, rankings and therefore commercial metrics; the extent and outcome cannot be predicted. Our website relaunch checklist sets out the steps.
Since 28.06.2025, requirements under Germany's Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz have applied to certain products and services offered to consumers. The scope and exemptions depend on the specific offer and business and should be assessed by a qualified professional. Independently of this, an accessible website improves usability. Clarify the standard, scope of testing and documentation in the proposal.
A proposal that discloses these items openly appears more expensive at first glance. It is simply more honest.
Chapter 04
Website builder, freelancer or agency?
The question behind the cost question is: who should build it? All three routes are legitimate. They simply distribute money, time and risk differently.
A website builder may suit manageable requirements. Compare licence and ongoing costs, your own working time, design flexibility, data exports and provider lock-in over the planned period of use.
A freelancer may suit a clearly scoped project. Address availability, cover, rights, maintenance and handover in the contract.
An agency can combine design, technology, copy and SEO. Liability and responsibilities arise from its legal form and the contract, not from the word ‘agency’. Whether the structure is economical depends on your needs. Learn more in Agency or in-house?
If your website is primarily intended to support a single campaign, you may not need a complete website at all, but a landing page to begin with.

Chapter 05
How to recognise a fair proposal
Take any website proposal and ask these six questions. A reputable provider answers every one clearly:
- Are copy, photos and migration of the old content included or charged as extras?
- How many design templates are included in the calculation, and what does an additional one cost?
- What happens to my Google rankings during the migration? Who plans the redirects?
- What ongoing costs arise after launch: hosting, updates and changes?
- Which usage rights and controls over the domain, accounts and access do you receive after payment, and which third-party rights remain?
- How will the site be tested at relevant screen sizes and with a keyboard? Responsive web design and accessibility should be specified through test methods and acceptance criteria.
Chapter 06
How we price projects at MINDWEBMEDIA
Before quoting a price, we assess the scope: what the site needs to do, which content already exists, what needs to be created and what it should achieve after launch. We then agree the price, included services and handling of changes transparently.
You receive a calculation itemised by the four drivers so you can see what you are paying for. If a website builder or single landing page is the better option in your case, we tell you, even if we earn less as a result.
That is not generosity but professional integrity rooted in financial control: no euro leaves your account without a figure that justifies it. For web design projects, that begins with the proposal.
In short
The key points at a glance
A reliable website calculation defines at least the scope, content, technology and maintenance. A fixed price may be suitable when assumptions, revisions, acceptance and potential additional services are defined in writing.
Do not compare proposals by the final total alone; use the questions in this article. Differences in price may result from scope, working methods, rights, risk or excluded services.
If you want to know what YOUR website would cost, we will assess your case and show you the calculation. Free of charge, with transparent figures and an honest answer if you do not need a new website at all.
