Responsive web design explained simply.

Quick definition

Responsive web design is a design approach in which a website's layout, images and navigation automatically adapt to the screen size of each device. A responsive website works equally well on a smartphone, tablet or desktop computer. It is implemented technically using flexible grids, scalable images and CSS media queries.

Section 01

Why mobile-first is now the standard

Most website visits now take place on smartphones. Building a site only for desktop therefore means optimising it for a minority of your visitors. That is why mobile-first has become the standard: the website is designed for small screens first and then expanded for larger ones, not the other way round.

Google takes the same approach. Since moving to mobile-first indexing, the search engine primarily evaluates the mobile version of your website. If that version is unusable, all your rankings suffer. Responsive web design is therefore no longer optional but a basic requirement for SEO. Our SEO for beginners guide explains the principles step by step.

Section 02

How to tell when your website is not responsive

You do not need developer expertise for this. Open your website on a smartphone and look for these warning signs:

If even one point applies, it costs you visitors every day. Mobile users are impatient: anyone who has to zoom will leave. This harms not only your rankings but also your enquiries. Our article on conversion rate optimisation explains how closely user experience and revenue are connected.

  • You have to zoom in to read the text.
  • The page scrolls horizontally, with content extending beyond the edge of the screen.
  • Buttons and links are so small that you repeatedly tap beside them.
  • Images look distorted or the layout shifts.
  • Forms are difficult to complete on a phone.

Section 03

What you can do now

Minor problems can often be resolved with technical improvements. If your website is several years old, however, a relaunch is usually the more honest solution. Modern web design builds responsiveness in from the outset instead of bolting it on afterwards.

If you are unsure where your site stands, we can review it together in a free strategy session and tell you honestly whether improvements are sufficient or a fresh start would achieve more.
