Introduction
TikTok marketing for businesses means planning and publishing short videos with a specific objective, then evaluating them using your own data.
TikTok can also show content to people who do not yet follow an account. The amount of relevant reach this generates depends on the specific content, account and current platform distribution.
This guide sets out a limited test without promising reach or enquiries and explains when another channel may make more sense.
Chapter 01
Why TikTok can be relevant to businesses
TikTok uses a recommendation system whose precise weighting and distribution can change. Follower numbers, interactions, video content and other signals may play a role, but they cannot be used to predict reach.
Even a small account can reach people who do not follow it. This does not guarantee the same reach as a large account or corporation.
Visible processes in a trades business, gym, beauty business or restaurant can provide suitable test content. Audience fit and impact must be measured.
TikTok can be an additional channel for recruitment topics, provided the audience can be reached and the current rules for employment adverts are observed. Read more in our social recruitment guide.
When is TikTok not worthwhile? When your customers are not there, or nobody in the business has time for video. A half-hearted channel costs more than having none at all.
Chapter 02
Understanding the TikTok algorithm
The complete distribution logic is neither permanently public nor controllable from the outside. Do not rely on simplified stage models or supposed algorithm hacks.
Monitor metrics such as watch time, completed views, interactions and profile actions in your own analytics area, where these figures are currently available.
A clear opening can aid understanding. Only a comparison of several videos can show whether it improves distribution or commercial impact.
What exactly is a hook? An opening that gives people a reason to stay: a bold proposition, the result up front or a hand reaching for a tool. No logo, no intro.
Chapter 03
Business account or creator account?
Business and creator accounts may offer different analytics, advertising, profile and music features. Before deciding, check the current range of features and the relevant music and usage rights directly with TikTok.
A business account may be the natural choice for a company if it provides the required measurement and advertising features. The right choice depends on the specific use case.
The profile itself is quick to complete: use your logo as the profile picture, choose a clear name and write a bio that states your offer and location. If you are based in Ottweiler or Neunkirchen, say so. Being local is a filter, not a flaw.
Chapter 04
Content formats you can test on TikTok
Production and tone should suit your audience and brand. There is no universal answer as to whether a raw or highly polished style will work better for any given account.
At its heart, this is content marketing in its most direct form: be useful first, then sell.
From my own experience, I have set up our camera in factory workshops more often than in studios. Filming on location in Saarland produces both planned and spontaneous shots; only the evaluation will show which resonate with the intended audience.
Five formats provide useful test hypotheses:
- Edutainment: explain specialist knowledge clearly, without blanket claims about mistakes or unsupported promises.
- Behind the scenes: real working life. Workshop, kitchen, building site. No script, no posing.
- Trend adaptations: use current sounds and formats only once usage rights, brand fit and relevance have been clarified.
- Storytelling: tell stories about projects, customers and your team only when the rights have been cleared, and never invent case studies.
- Before and after: present visual changes factually and without misleading promises of results, such as a renovated façade or a completed conversion.

Chapter 05
TikTok adverts: building paid reach
TikTok Ads Manager provides various campaign, targeting and advert options. Check the account and applicable policies to see which are currently permitted in your market and advert category.
In-Feed, TopView and Spark formats can serve different purposes, depending on availability. There is no universally best starting point and no guaranteed effect.
Regional targeting can limit wasted reach if it accurately reflects the actual service area. It guarantees neither delivery nor any applications or customers.
The cost of a test depends on factors including the audience, service area, format, competition, measurement objective and a commercially viable value per enquiry. We therefore work backwards and treat every input as an assumption.
Our principle then applies: no advertising euro leaves the account without a figure to justify it. Measure. Reallocate. Implement.
Remember what happens after the click. The landing page must follow through clearly on the advert's promise. Measure whether it produces a qualified enquiry while accounting for measurement gaps and the conversion rate.
Chapter 06
Avoiding common mistakes on TikTok
One risk is reusing content from other platforms without checking it. Adapt the aspect ratio, length, subtitles, rights clearance and opening to TikTok's current requirements and your audience.
The second mistake is posting nothing but advertising. Test offers against useful or explanatory content instead of assuming that the algorithm will provide reach.
The third is ignoring comments. Community management can pick up questions and provide subjects for further content, but it does not guarantee a loyal audience, reach or enquiries.
The fourth is posting without a plan. We call it the content treadmill: plenty of effort, no progress. Our 2026 social media trends guide explains what is currently gaining traction on the platforms.
Chapter 07
TikTok analytics: measuring performance
Use the metrics currently available for your chosen account, such as views, watch time, interactions or profile actions. Check their definitions before comparing periods.
More important than any single figure is the chain behind it. Does the video lead to profile visits? Do profile visits lead to enquiries? We track channels through to the enquiry, not merely the click.
Define an appropriate evaluation period in advance. The time required depends on your reach and objective; do not delete weak content prematurely or let it continue without a learning objective.
Position TikTok within your customer journey. Only your own data can show whether the channel appears at the beginning, during a later research phase or not at all; neither a website nor Google guarantees a conversion.
In short
The key points at a glance
TikTok can distribute content beyond your existing follower base. Only your own account data can show how relevant that reach is.
The process is to define your audience and objective, check the current platform rules, test suitable formats and evaluate qualified outcomes rather than views alone.
You can assess whether TikTok is a sensible test channel for your business by considering your audience, the rules, your resources and your measurement plan. Only a limited test with qualified outcomes can demonstrate commercial viability.
