The 5 biggest social media mistakes businesses make—and how to fix them

Five recurring risks can hold business accounts back. Learn how to recognise them and test a change in your own account.

Introduction

‘We need to do something with social media.’ That sentence is not an objective. Without a defined audience, purpose and metric, it remains a hunch with an Instagram login.

An account can contribute little to a business objective despite publishing many posts. Whether social media makes sense for a trades business, tax adviser or engineering company depends on the audience, offer, resources and measurability.

We encounter five recurring risks in audits. Here you will learn how to recognise them, test a change and evaluate the result in your own account.

Chapter 01

Mistake 1: posting without a strategy

The classic pattern: a team photo on Monday, a Henry Ford quote on Wednesday and the new coffee machine in the break room on Friday. Each post is fine on its own. Together, they add up to nothing. No common thread, no objective, no audience. The feed is a digital photo album nobody asked for.

You can identify this mistake with one simple question: ‘Why are we posting this?’ If the answer is ‘because we have not posted for a while’, you do not have a strategy. You have busywork.

The solution requires no marketing degree, just three decisions. First, what should social media achieve for you: applications, enquiries or local awareness? Choose one. Second, whom exactly do you want to reach? ‘Everyone’ is not an audience; it is an excuse. Third, define three content pillars, such as insights into your work, knowledge for customers, and your team and culture. Every post must fit a pillar or it does not get published. Our guide to creating a social media strategy explains the process step by step.

Chapter 02

Mistake 2: advertising instead of value

Some accounts consist almost entirely of offers, products and discounts. This can miss the audience's questions and interests. Only a comparison in your own account will show whether explanatory content, insights or offers make the greater contribution.

Platforms weigh many changing signals when distributing content. You therefore cannot infer reach from a single interaction or a particular content mix.

Test a mixture of useful content and clearly labelled offers. Answer genuine customer questions, show a project process clearly and explain indicators of quality. Measure within your own funnel whether this builds trust or generates enquiries instead of relying on a fixed content ratio.

  • Write down 10 questions your customers ask repeatedly. Those are your first 10 posts.
  • Evaluate useful and sales-focused content separately instead of adopting a universal ratio.
  • Test sales posts with and without factual context against one another instead of assuming an effect.

Chapter 03

Mistake 3: giving up after six weeks

The typical pattern begins with great enthusiasm in January. Three posts a week and everyone is motivated. Things quieten down in February. A major order arrives in March. Then the last post is dated 14 March and wishes everyone a happy Easter—from the previous year.

The problem is that a channel often cannot be assessed reliably after a short test with little data. At the same time, an outdated profile should make clear which information remains current.

Choose a frequency you can maintain during busy periods and batch-produce suitable formats. The amount of material a filming day provides, and the frequency it can sustain, depend on the format, approvals and production effort. Read more about video production.

Chapter 04

Mistake 4: using every platform at once

Managing Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn and YouTube at the same time can spread capacity and data across too many tests. The same content cannot simply be transferred to every format and feature without review either.

For each account, assess the objective, ownership, format and evaluation. A LinkedIn post may need adapting for TikTok; only a specific test will show whether reuse works.

Limit yourself to platforms whose audience fit you can demonstrate through customer conversations, existing data and a limited test. Expand only when ownership, production and evaluation work reliably on the first channel.

Chapter 05

Mistake 5: ignoring engagement

It is called social media, not a noticeboard. Yet many businesses treat their channels like one: put up a post, shut it and return next week. Comments go unanswered, direct messages sit in the inbox for days and questions disappear into the void.

Unanswered questions can make dialogue more difficult. Whether and how a response affects reach, trust or enquiries depends on the account and situation; platform mechanics provide no firm assurance.

Set a response time your team can genuinely meet and prioritise specific questions or service cases. Use recurring questions as potential content ideas without inferring fixed demand from a single message. Our conversion rate optimisation guide explains how to make the path to an enquiry measurable.

Chapter 06

What if there simply is not enough time?

All five mistakes share the same cause: social media is treated as a side task, squeezed between two appointments whenever there is a spare moment. But ‘on the side’ is precisely where strategy, consistency and community management reliably die.

You can start in-house with an objective, content pillars, a choice of platforms and a realistic frequency. Account for working time, approvals and potential production costs as well. If you lack that capacity, our social media marketing service can take on defined tasks; reach and enquiries still cannot be guaranteed.

In short

The key points at a glance

Assess five risks: no objective, one-sided advertising, conclusions based on too little data, too many platforms and a lack of dialogue. A limited test with suitable metrics will show which change helps.

Start with what will make the biggest difference: a clear strategy and a frequency you can genuinely sustain. Consistency beats perfection.

If time is short, reduce the scope and responsibilities or consider support. A channel that is no longer maintained should not retain outdated contact, service or availability information.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How often should a business post on social media?
There is no universal figure. Choose a frequency your team can sustain with consistent quality and reasonable response times. Then compare formats and periods in your own account.
Which platform is right for my business?
Use customer conversations, existing data, current platform features and a limited test to decide. Start with a clear focus and expand only once ownership, production and evaluation are working reliably.
How long does it take for social media to produce results?
There is no fixed timeframe. Your audience, platform, offer, budget, content and starting position all influence whether and when measurable effects emerge. Define criteria in advance and evaluate the channel using sufficient data of your own instead of relying on a promise about timing.
Is a social media agency worthwhile?
It may be worthwhile if strategy, production or community management cannot be handled reliably in-house. Check the scope, approval process, account access and metrics; an agency cannot promise platform reach or enquiries either.
